BJP Questions K’taka Govt Over Caste Certificate Requirement for Griha Jyothi Scheme

Bengaluru: The BJP has criticised the Karnataka government over reports that beneficiaries of the Griha Jyothi free electricity scheme are being asked to submit additional documents, including caste certificates, during the re-verification process.

In a post on social media platform X, the party questioned the need for documents such as PAN cards and caste certificates, asking why a voter ID alone was not sufficient for the verification exercise.

The BJP alleged that the Congress government, which had promised 200 units of free electricity without conditions, was now seeking multiple documents from beneficiaries under the guise of re-verification, leading to confusion among the public.

Targeting Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, the party asked, “Why is a caste certificate required to determine electricity consumption? Why is a PAN card needed to provide electricity? Is this an attempt to reduce the number of beneficiaries under the guarantee scheme?”

The BJP demanded that the state government immediately clarify the purpose of seeking additional documents and issue clear guidelines to remove uncertainty among beneficiaries.

The controversy comes amid the government’s ongoing verification of beneficiaries under various guarantee schemes.
