Bengaluru: The Congress will complete the appointment of District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents in Karnataka by August 24 as part of its nationwide ‘Sanghatan Srujan’ organisational campaign, AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal said on Friday.
Addressing a press conference at Indira Gandhi Bhavan, Venugopal said the campaign was launched following a decision taken at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Belagavi to strengthen the party organisation from the booth level to the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC).
He said the appointment of DCC presidents had already been completed in 762 of the 1,054 districts across the country. After the district-level appointments, the party will begin the process of constituting committees at the DCC, Block, Mandal and Booth levels.
According to Venugopal, senior Congress leaders, Members of Parliament, former ministers and MLAs have been appointed as observers for 40 districts in Karnataka. Each observer will spend at least seven days in the assigned district, holding consultations with party workers, local leaders and representatives of various organisations before recommending names for the DCC president’s post.
He said the final appointments would be made after consultations with the KPCC leadership, Congress Working Committee members, the Chief Minister and the party’s state in-charge secretary.
Venugopal said the Congress has set a target of appointing leaders below the age of 50 as DCC presidents in 50% of the districts. He added that the party also aims to provide 50% representation to leaders belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs).
At least six names will be shortlisted from each district before the final selection, he said, adding that the performance and organisational effectiveness of the appointed DCC presidents would be reviewed on a regular basis.
