Nagoya: Indian wrestler Sunil Kumar won the bronze medal in the men’s Greco-Roman 87kg category at the Asian Games 2026, defeating the Philippines’ Callum Johnston Roberts 9-0 by technical superiority on Wednesday.
The victory opened India’s wrestling medal account at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. It also gave Sunil his second consecutive Asian Games bronze, following his podium finish at Hangzhou, making him the first Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to win two Asian Games medals.
The 27-year-old Indian received a direct entry into the quarter-finals, where he defeated Tajikistan’s Muhammad Sultonzoda 9-0 by technical superiority.

Sunil’s run ended in the semi-finals after he was beaten 11-0 by Japan’s former Asian champion Taizo Yoshida.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Sunil Kumar on his bronze medal, calling the performance a proud moment for Indian wrestling.
Modi said Sunil secured the podium with a convincing victory and wished him continued success in future competitions.
The Prime Minister’s Office said the medal reflected Sunil’s strong performance at the Games and expressed hope that he would continue to win honours for India.
