BJP banks on caste balance, picks two organisation loyalists for Council

Bengaluru: The BJP has announced the names of Lingaraj Patil and Raghu Kautilya as its candidates for the Karnataka Legislative Council, signalling a strategy aimed at strengthening its social coalition ahead of future elections.

The party’s choice has drawn attention for its apparent focus on caste representation, with leaders from the Lingayat and Other Backward Classes (OBC) communities being accommodated in the Upper House.

Lingaraj Patil, a senior BJP functionary, previously served as chairman of the party’s state disciplinary committee and is regarded as a key organisational leader. Party insiders credit him with playing an important role in maintaining internal discipline and strengthening the organisation.

Raghu Kautilya, meanwhile, serves as the state president of the BJP OBC Morcha and has been actively involved in expanding the party’s outreach among backward-class communities across Karnataka.

Political observers view the nominations as part of the BJP’s broader effort to consolidate support among influential social groups while rewarding long-serving organisational leaders. The move is also being seen as an attempt to further strengthen the party’s base among Lingayat and OBC voters in the state.

The nominations come at a time when political parties are increasingly focusing on social representation and caste equations in candidate selection, with the BJP seeking to strike a balance between organisational loyalty and electoral considerations.
