New Delhi: The field operations for Houselisting and Housing Census (HLO) under Phase I of Census 2027 have commenced in Rajasthan, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) area as part of the nationwide Census exercise.

The government said house-to-house enumeration by officials is already underway in several states and Union Territories, including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Telangana and Uttarakhand.

The Self-Enumeration (SE) facility has now been launched in Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and Puducherry, and will remain open till May 31. Physical HLO operations in these regions will be conducted from June 1 to June 30.

In Uttar Pradesh, self-enumeration will continue till May 21, after which enumerators will begin field visits from May 22 to June 20.

The Registrar General of India said earlier Census operations conducted between April 16 and May 15 had been completed in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Odisha, Sikkim, NDMC area and Delhi Cantonment.

The government said more than 1.44 crore households across 25 states and Union Territories have already completed self-enumeration through the official Census portal, marking a major push towards digital Census operations.

Residents who complete self-enumeration have been asked to keep their Self-Enumeration ID ready and share it with enumerators during verification visits.

Census 2027 is being conducted digitally for the first time while continuing the traditional door-to-door process. Enumerators are collecting information through a dedicated mobile application covering housing conditions, household details, amenities and assets.

Officials said all information collected under the Census Act, 1948 will remain strictly confidential and will be used only for statistical and development planning purposes.
