Centre Announces Two Major Reforms to Boost Indian Film Industry

New Delhi: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has announced two key initiatives aimed at strengthening India’s film industry and expanding cinema infrastructure across the country.

The decisions were taken during a high-level review meeting chaired by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi. The minister directed officials to implement structural measures to support film production, distribution and technological innovation.

A high-level Study Group has been constituted under the chairmanship of Prasoon Joshi. The group will include industry experts and technology partners and will examine opportunities and challenges facing Indian cinema.

The panel will recommend measures to improve the global competitiveness of Indian films, promote the adoption of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and virtual production, explore new financing avenues, address funding challenges faced by filmmakers and suggest a comprehensive policy framework for the long-term growth of the sector. The group is expected to submit its report within three months.

In another major step, the ministry has prepared Model State Cinema Regulations and circulated them to state governments for adoption. Since cinema regulation falls under the jurisdiction of states, varying rules and approval procedures have often slowed the development of cinema halls, particularly in smaller towns and rural areas.

The proposed model regulations aim to simplify approvals, encourage investment and accelerate the expansion of cinema infrastructure nationwide. The Centre has also offered support to states for implementing the new framework.

The ministry said the initiatives are expected to create a stronger, more modern and globally competitive Indian film industry while promoting creativity, culture and innovation.
