New Delhi: The Centre has said that nearly 99.07 lakh houses have been completed and handed over to beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U), while the scheme has been extended till September 30, 2026, to facilitate completion of already sanctioned projects.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) said a total of 127.68 lakh houses, including 16.20 lakh under PMAY-U 2.0, have been sanctioned since the scheme was launched in June 2015. Of these, 121.02 lakh houses have been grounded and 99.07 lakh have been completed as of July 13, 2026.
The revamped PMAY-U 2.0, launched on September 1, 2024, aims to provide housing support to one crore additional eligible urban beneficiaries over the next five years. The mission is being implemented through four components — Beneficiary-Led Construction (BLC), Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), Affordable Rental Housing (ARH) and the Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS).
In Tamil Nadu, the Centre has sanctioned 6.86 lakh houses, including 18,000 houses under PMAY-U 2.0. More than 6.74 lakh houses have been grounded, while 6.32 lakh have already been completed and delivered to beneficiaries.
The ministry said PMAY-U is a demand-driven scheme, with project identification, beneficiary selection and implementation carried out by respective State and Union Territory governments in accordance with the scheme guidelines. Construction timelines generally range between 12 and 36 months, depending on factors such as land availability, statutory clearances and financial arrangements by beneficiaries.
The Centre added that all houses constructed under PMAY-U must meet prescribed technical and quality standards and be equipped with basic civic amenities, including water supply, sanitation, electricity and road connectivity through convergence with other government schemes. Progress is being monitored regularly through review meetings, video conferences and field inspections.
