Bengaluru: The Centre has informed the Lok Sabha that it has not yet received an official proposal from the Karnataka government for the construction of a second international airport in Bengaluru.
In a written reply to a question by Bengaluru Central MP P.C. Mohan, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had conducted a pre-feasibility study of three locations identified by the state government and submitted its report to Karnataka.
However, the ministry said the state government has not submitted the formal proposal required under the Greenfield Airport Policy. It added that the Centre can begin the evaluation and approval process only after receiving the official proposal from the state.
The clarification comes amid ongoing discussions over the proposed location of Bengaluru’s second airport, with sites in Bengaluru South and Tumakuru being considered.
Following the reply, P.C. Mohan shared the Centre’s response on X, stating that while the AAI had completed the pre-feasibility study and submitted its report to the Karnataka government, the state had not yet forwarded a proposal to the Centre for further action.
