Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has introduced 41 additional special buses across Chennai from July 13 to ensure safer and more convenient travel for school students.
With the addition of the new services, the total number of special buses for students has increased to 66, operating 134 trips daily between residential areas and schools during opening and closing hours.
The initiative has been launched following the directions of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to reduce overcrowding in regular public buses and provide students with a safer and more comfortable commuting experience.

The decision was based on a 10-day survey conducted by the Transport Department in several areas, including Saidapet. After consultations with students, parents, teachers and school authorities, officials identified the most congested routes and introduced additional services where needed.
The move also follows a request by Saidapet MLA Arul Prakasam, who urged Transport Minister A. Vijay Tamilan Parthiban to provide additional bus services for students in his constituency.
