Bengaluru: Karnataka Law and Tourism Minister H.K. Patil on Wednesday said the state government would make all possible efforts to protect the voting rights of citizens if any process unfairly deprives them of their franchise.
Speaking after discussions on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of electoral rolls in Karnataka, the minister said concerns were raised over allegations that nearly 27 lakh people were deprived of voting rights due to the SIR exercise, particularly in West Bengal.
He said the meeting discussed the background of the allegations, possible irregularities and serious objections related to the implementation of the process.
According to H.K. Patil, the possibility of approaching the Supreme Court regarding the issue was also considered during the discussions.
The minister stated that more detailed deliberations are required on issues such as the final voter list, transparency in the SIR process and its overall implementation before taking a final decision.
“An appropriate decision will be taken soon after further discussions,” he said.
