Mamata Banerjee Accuses BJP Government of Curtailing Freedom of Expression

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the BJP-led government of restricting freedom of speech and expression, alleging that the rights of citizens, including elected representatives, are under threat.

In a statement, Banerjee said the government was disregarding Articles 14, 19 and 21 of the Constitution, which deal with equality before the law, freedom of speech and expression, and the protection of life and personal liberty, respectively.

She expressed support for students, young people, social media users, vloggers, YouTubers and independent digital platforms, calling for them to be allowed to express their views freely.

“We demand that they must be allowed to express themselves freely,” Banerjee said, urging people to unite against what she described as a growing trend of censorship.

The Trinamool Congress leader also criticised the government over its alleged actions against citizens on social media. She called on the Centre to focus on addressing issues in the Northeast and ensuring the safety and security of people across the country.

Banerjee’s remarks come amid wider political debates over freedom of expression, online content regulation and the rights of independent digital creators.

She reiterated her support for those seeking to exercise their right to free expression and called for constitutional freedoms to be protected.
