NEW DELHI: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit India from October 17 to 22, with discussions expected to focus on strengthening bilateral strategic ties, expanding trade and investment, and enhancing energy cooperation amid shifting global geopolitical dynamics.
During his visit, Rubio is expected to travel to Mumbai, India’s financial capital, and Jamnagar, a major industrial hub in Gujarat, where he will meet senior government officials and leading business representatives.
The visit follows his participation in the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting held in New Delhi in May. According to the US announcement, Rubio’s engagements will focus on the strategic partnership between India and the US, regional security in the Indo-Pacific, and key international developments.

Trade and investment in focus
Expanding economic engagement is expected to be a key priority during Rubio’s visit. Meetings with prominent Indian business leaders are likely to explore opportunities to boost private investment, strengthen commercial partnerships and expand business ties between the two countries.
Energy cooperation is also expected to feature prominently in the discussions, particularly in areas such as global crude oil supplies, petrochemicals and renewable energy. Both sides are expected to explore opportunities for joint projects and closer coordination to strengthen energy security.
The visit comes amid concerns over the stability of global energy supply chains following heightened tensions in the Middle East. Greater cooperation between Washington and New Delhi could play an important role in strengthening energy security and maintaining stability in international oil markets.
Talks with Central Asian ministers
Rubio is also scheduled to hold discussions with ministers from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and the Kyrgyz Republic. A US business delegation comprising more than 200 executives is expected to accompany him to explore opportunities to expand commercial engagement between the US and Central Asian countries.
India-US trade deal
The visit comes at a crucial time for India-US trade negotiations. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently indicated that discussions on a bilateral trade agreement were approaching a decisive stage.
Rubio’s engagements are expected to provide an opportunity to review the progress of negotiations and explore ways to resolve outstanding issues. The outcome could influence the next phase of economic cooperation between the two countries.
With trade, energy security and Indo-Pacific stability high on the agenda, the visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to India-US relations amid evolving international challenges.
