New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday sought to reassure students and parents over the NEET question paper leak controversy, asserting that such incidents are “not a normal occurrence” and promising stringent action against those responsible.
In a video message, the Prime Minister acknowledged the anxiety and distress faced by lakhs of students and their families, saying the Centre was committed to restoring confidence in the country’s examination system.
Announcing a series of measures to curb examination-related malpractices, Modi said the government would introduce a new law providing for strict punishment for those involved in question paper leaks and other exam fraud. The proposed legislation will be placed before the Union Cabinet before being introduced in Parliament, he said.
Highlighting the government’s response to the NEET controversy, Modi said the principal accused in the case had been arrested and sent to jail over the past two-and-a-half months.

He added that the Centre had prioritised protecting students’ academic interests by conducting a re-examination for more than 22 lakh candidates within a short period, with the results declared on July 19.
The Prime Minister also announced plans to establish fast-track courts for the speedy trial of question paper leak cases. He said a draft Bill had already been prepared and the government intended to introduce and pass the legislation during the second week of the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of competitive examinations, Modi said transparency and credibility in the examination process remained top priorities.
“There will be no leniency towards anyone who attempts to play with the future of students through examination malpractices,” the Prime Minister said, adding that the Centre was determined to ensure that such incidents are dealt with swiftly and decisively.
