New Delhi: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was admitted to hospital early on Saturday after his health deteriorated following a 20-day hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
Wangchuk launched the indefinite fast demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and seeking reforms in the education system.
According to Delhi Police, Wangchuk was shifted to hospital following directions from the Delhi High Court and on the advice of doctors. Police said the transfer was carried out peacefully despite objections from some protesters.
Earlier this week, the Delhi High Court directed authorities to conduct daily medical examinations of Wangchuk and ensure that he received necessary treatment.
Doctors said the 59-year-old activist is in a critical condition after nearly three weeks without food and has reportedly lost more than eight kilograms. They warned that prolonged fasting could lead to serious complications, including the risk of organ failure.
Several opposition leaders, including Congress leader Pawan Khera, Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav, and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, met Wangchuk and appealed to him to end his fast.
Meanwhile, protesters have announced a march to Parliament on July 20 in support of their demands.
