Supreme Court Orders Formation of GRCs Across Courts

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has directed all High Courts across the country to constitute ‘Grievance Redressal Committees’ (GRCs) at district and taluk levels to address issues between lawyers and the judiciary in an amicable and time-bound manner.

A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi observed that committees involving judges, Bar Council members and Bar Association representatives would help maintain healthy relations between the Bench and the Bar.

The observations came during the hearing of a suo motu case related to an incident involving Tarlada Rajasekhar Rao and a young lawyer in the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

The apex court noted that the issue had already been resolved amicably through the intervention of the Chief Justice of the High Court and the High Court Bar Association, and therefore no further directions were necessary in the matter.

During the proceedings, Vikas Singh stressed the need for an institutional mechanism to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.

The court also emphasised that judges should encourage young lawyers with patience, compassion and guidance to create a healthy legal environment.

At the same time, the Supreme Court cautioned the media against airing court video clips without proper context, stating that such broadcasts could create unnecessary prejudice. However, the bench appreciated legal journalists for generally reporting court proceedings responsibly.
