New Delhi: Indian athlete Pooja won the bronze medal in the women’s high jump at the Asian Games 2026 on Tuesday, clearing 1.84 metres in the final.
Pooja cleared every height up to 1.84m on her first attempt. Her clean record helped her secure third place on countback after competitors from China and Kazakhstan also matched her best clearance.
Uzbekistan’s Barnokhon Sayfullaeva clinched the gold medal with a clearance of 1.90m, while Kazakhstan’s Kristina Ovchinnikova took silver after clearing 1.87m.
Pooja’s bronze marked India’s first Asian Games medal in the women’s high jump in more than two decades, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Congratulating Pooja, Modi described the performance as a memorable achievement for Indian athletics and wished her success in her future competitions.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister’s Office said the medal was a “proud moment for Indian athletics” and highlighted that it was India’s first medal in the event at the Asian Games in over two decades.
