BJP seeks white paper on Karnataka’s finances, raises concern over pending dues

Haveri: Senior BJP leader and MP Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday urged Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar to release a white paper detailing Karnataka’s financial condition, alleging that the state is facing a severe fiscal strain.

Speaking to reporters in Shiggaon, Bommai claimed that allegations of corruption and harassment have surfaced over the clearance of contractors’ bills, particularly in North Karnataka, where pending dues are estimated at around ₹23,000 crore.

He said the government should place before the public comprehensive details of the state’s debt burden, utilisation of borrowings, capital expenditure, spending on salaries and pensions, and allocations towards guarantee schemes.

Despite presenting a budget of ₹4.5 lakh crore, Bommai alleged that more than 90% of the expenditure is committed towards mandatory obligations, leaving limited resources for development works. He said the government must clearly explain its roadmap for managing finances and funding future projects.

The BJP leader also accused the government of neglecting the agriculture sector, claiming that shortages of seeds and fertilisers have been reported in several districts. He alleged that some traders are hoarding supplies and selling them at inflated prices, and urged the government to intervene immediately to protect farmers’ interests.

Commenting on developments in the Water Resources Department, Bommai said reports of dissatisfaction over portfolio allocation and the perceived lack of interest in the department’s functioning do not send a positive message to the administration.

On speculation about leadership changes within the BJP, Bommai dismissed such reports, saying organisational adjustments are being undertaken solely to strengthen the party.
