Glasgow: India officially took over the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad set to stage the centenary edition of the event after the baton was handed over during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Games in Glasgow on Sunday.
Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association president P.T. Usha and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsha Sanghvi accepted the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) flag and the ceremonial baton on behalf of India.
The 2030 edition will mark 100 years of the Commonwealth Games, making it the second time India will host the event after the 2010 Delhi Games.
Ahmedabad is expected to host 15-17 sporting disciplines, with the Narendra Modi Stadium and the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave serving as the main venues.
India also showcased its cultural heritage through an 18-minute performance featuring the themes of ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, with performances by Shankar Mahadevan, Bhumi Trivedi and Rishabh Sharma.
The successful hosting of the 2030 Commonwealth Games is expected to strengthen India’s bid to stage the 2036 Olympic Games, highlighting the country’s sporting infrastructure and organisational capabilities.
