Karnataka braces for heavy rain; IMD issues red alert for June 9-10

Bengaluru: The southwest monsoon has intensified across Karnataka, with several districts witnessing heavy rainfall, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for parts of the state over the next two days.

The IMD has forecast extremely heavy rainfall in several districts of south interior Karnataka on June 9 and extended the red alert to wider parts of the state on June 10. Authorities have been asked to remain on high alert amid the possibility of flooding, waterlogging and strong winds.

Districts likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall include Bengaluru, Tumakuru, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Ramanagara, Mandya, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Chitradurga and Davanagere.

Heavy showers have already been reported from several regions, including Dakshina Kannada, Ballari and Bagalkote.

With rainfall activity expected to intensify further along the coast, authorities have stepped up monitoring in vulnerable areas. Teams of the National Disaster Response Force have been kept on standby wherever required.

Officials have advised residents living near rivers, streams and low-lying areas to remain alert and avoid venturing into flood-prone locations unless necessary. District administrations have also initiated precautionary measures to deal with any rain-related emergencies.
