Port Blair: State-owned Oil India Limited (OIL) has discovered a new natural gas reserve in the Andaman Sea, providing a significant boost to India’s energy exploration efforts.
The discovery was made in the Vijayapuram-3 exploration well drilled under the Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP). The well is located about 15 km off the eastern coast of the Andaman Islands at a water depth of 355 metres.
According to the company, the latest find confirms the presence of hydrocarbons in two of the three exploration wells drilled so far in the AN-OSHP-2018/1 block.
Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the discovery highlights the vast untapped energy potential of the Andaman offshore region and strengthens India’s efforts to enhance domestic energy production.
The discovery comes at a time when global energy markets continue to face uncertainty, underscoring the importance of expanding indigenous oil and gas resources.
