Mangaluru: Three people, including a woman and two young girls, were killed after the roof of an old tiled house collapsed amid heavy rain in the Kankanady area of Mangaluru on Wednesday, officials said.
Heavy rainfall, which began on Tuesday night, continued through Wednesday, triggering the collapse of the ageing structure. Local residents and personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation to pull those trapped beneath the debris.

Rescuers managed to pull out a man and two girls alive from the rubble. The injured were shifted to a private hospital in Mangaluru, where they are undergoing treatment.
According to officials, both the deceased and the injured are natives of Bihar and were staying in a rented house in Kankanady.
A case has been registered at the Kankanady Police Station, and police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
Expressing grief over the tragedy, the Dakshina Kannada district administration announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased victim. Deputy Commissioner Darshan also said the district administration would bear the entire cost of treatment for the injured.
