New Delhi: Union Heavy Industries and Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Thursday called for an inclusive, affordable and economically sustainable transition to electric mobility, stressing the need for greater localisation, innovation and cost competitiveness.
Kumaraswamy was interacting with EV beneficiaries and distributors from across the country at Vigyan Bhawan, in a programme organised by the Ministry of Heavy Industries to gather ground-level feedback on electric vehicle adoption.
Kumaraswamy said the government was committed to building an Atmanirbhar Bharat and achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047.
He highlighted the PM E-DRIVE, PLI-Auto and PLI-ACC schemes, saying they were supporting EV adoption, charging infrastructure and domestic manufacturing of advanced automotive technologies and battery cells.
The minister said the transition to electric mobility must be backed by robust manufacturing, innovation and a strong supporting ecosystem. He also appreciated EV users for contributing to cleaner transportation and helping reduce dependence on crude oil.
He urged government, industry, distributors and consumers to work together to create a seamless and globally competitive EV ecosystem.
EV beneficiaries from different parts of the country shared their experiences of using electric vehicles for personal mobility, livelihoods, public transport and freight movement.
An e-two-wheeler user spoke about lower running costs, while e-three-wheeler driver Sunita Chaudhary highlighted reduced running expenses and driving fatigue. Beneficiaries also discussed the suitability of electric four-wheelers for passenger mobility.
The participants expressed confidence in continued government support and enabling policies for the sector.
Ministry of Heavy Industries secretary Kamran Rizvi said electric mobility presented an opportunity for India to emerge as a global player. He urged the industry to focus on technology, cost competitiveness and developing global capabilities.
Industry representatives from FADA, SIAM and ACMA also shared their perspectives on the evolving EV market.
The interaction was aimed at strengthening dialogue between policymakers, industry, distributors and EV users while supporting India’s transition towards cleaner and self-reliant mobility.
